There sure are a LOT of weight management tips across the internet, and after my research it appears finding the facts from trustworthy sources is harder than it seems. Heck, I’m a doctor and had trouble verifying a lot of this stuff, so how is someone without a medical degree supposed to find accurate and safe info? Today I’m taking a look at some popular weight loss tips around the internet to tell you what’s real and and what’s not.
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

  • I have been working to lose weight recently and the one thing I noticed is that there a certain foods that I can't control myself around. Pizza, pop tarts, pb&j etc .. I never buy those foods anymore. Doing this helps me meet my decreased calorie intake. Once I'm back to a healthy weight I would start to eat those foods again, but only as a rare treat. I miss pb&j the most:-(

  • OMG my friend used to do that. When she would eat, at a certain point she would squeeze a bunch of ketchup or anything she could find to "destroy" the food to stop eating. I always thought she had an eating disorder. She had post its on the wall with quotes and body weight goals. She read a book called pretty skinny or something like that. Instead of actually buy food from the hot bar at Wholefoods she would ask for a sample cup and try 3-4 different things and say she was full. Instead of meals she would drink from a bottle of Yogurt.

  • Hi thank you for this video, but I think if you as a doctor are talking about weight loss you should cover the effects of medicine. I worked like crazy i.e.. diet exercise and all checking with doctors multiple times over several years asking why I'm not losing any weight. Only after I gave up 2 years later did my psychiatrist point out the meds I was on actually made it almost impossible to lose weight.

  • I'm incredibly disappointed that a doctor, especially one with such a large platform, would even recommend an app like noom let alone take a sponsor from them. Restricting your eating and counting calories isn't not an effective weightloss method with the majority of people gaining weight back after the fact. Not to mention this idea that some foods are "bad" and are encouraged to be restricted. This need to restrict our calories in order to lose weight rather than implementing healthier lifestyle choices is diet culture at it's worst. And if you really think noom isn't the same as every other calorie counting app go see Abbey Sharps video where she reviews the app and even talked to a former employee of the app who left because they didn't agree with how it was run (all not sponsored btw)

  • Thank you for the video as always but here are my two cents from personal experience. As a former fatman in the obese category to a runner in the perfect healthy weight range for my height after years. 1-When it comes to the mirror, that has already been studied in cultural studies. More so in eastern cultures where communal food plates are used. The stigma associated with eating more than what you need, limits gluttony. 2- Whey protein powder comes in two variations. Isolate and Composite. Isolate is tasteless, though for some not good in taste. It is more expensive and thus isolate the protein on its own. Composite can be found more often and carries carbohydrates and fat with it, as well as limited sodium and almost no sugar. Furthermore, it is an extremely cheap alternative than consuming sea food or actual meal. Not to mention the efficiency of preparing a meal with it. A single sandwich, with whole bread, some turkey ham and 2 scoops of protein powder is an amazing meal which provides a large portion of your caloric intake to be derived from protein. Protein is not easily converted into basic sugars as carbs. Which helps with toning your muscles and lower weight at the same time.

  • Many people believe that weight gain and loss are about calories and willpower. However, modern obesity research disagrees. Scientists increasingly say that a hormone called LEPTIN is involved. Leptin resistance, in which your body does not respond to this hormone, is now believed to be the leading driver of fat gain in humans. Other than this they ask you for your credit card info at login, you don't pay through Google, they charge you directly to your credit card, and make you pay for 'free trial' which automatically renews after 14 days into membership which btw they charge you for 1 time fee not monthly so you can only cancel every other 6 months or smthng. Also there are no instruction or an option in the app to cancel said free trial in the app. You have to Google it. To cancel subscription, you have to type 'cancel' as a reply to their auto response bots, click the link that it sends you, redirected to a landing page then select to cancel subscription through there. So yeah heads up. App might be good or not I don't know, but the methods they use to get our money is crappy.

  • Remember everyone, weight is gained AND lost in the kitchen. Everything else is an assist.

    Kyle DurieKyle Durie11 kun oldin
  • The only one I would say is not wholly accurate is HIIT. You build more muscle (really meaning you break down your muscle more) and increase calories burned by putting your body under tension; or for cardio, exertion. The longer you are in tension, the longer you are exerting yourself, the more your body has to deal with that strain and adapt to it. Two minutes out of a 15 minute period having a high heart rate (somewhere around 160-180) is not going to be as effective as being at a consistent and more tame but still intense heart rate of around 120-140 for the entire 15 minute period without rest. HIIT is incredibly popular and done by so many people because, let's be honest, it's way easier to do than normal intensity training. You only have to exert yourself for one to two minutes and then you get to take an effective break for the next five. Rather than having to push yourself at a moderate pace for an extended period without rest. HIIT is faster, requires less effort, and does not maximize muscle growth or calories burned. It is a workout and it is fun, which is a valid enough reason to do it, but you're better off just going for a power-walk for 45 minutes or riding a bike instead of doing HIIT the entire time in order to maximize calories burned, i.e. weight loss.

  • Here's the thing Mike: you plugged Noom, that's awesome, it's something I've never heard of before, but I didn't really get a sense of what noom is or what it does. I'm going to go google that right now, so I can be informed but as I'm sure you're very familiar with, this is the curse of knowledge rearing it's ugly head. You know what it is, and you know that it's great, and you know what it does, and you told us just what it's doing for you, not how it's going to help me. is it information about workouts or nutrition or lifestyle or something? I'm about to find out, but it's always helpful to throw a few lines about that into the video. To be more literal: you said it's "a weight loss" application, and noom helps you with behavioral stuff? what behavior? my eating habits? my exercise habits? what behavior Mike? just saying. I love you man, thanks for the video, keep it going; looking forward to seeing more from you.

    • Well put. When you have a moment, look into this; see what you think. Many people believe that weight gain and loss are about calories and willpower. However, modern obesity research disagrees. Scientists increasingly say that a hormone called LEPTIN is involved. Leptin resistance, in which your body does not respond to this hormone, is now believed to be the leading driver of fat gain in humans. • Hey Doctor Mike, there's this Indian youtuber who ranks products like hair oil, soap, toothpaste, conditioner, shampoo and such from worst to best. He mentions certain "harmful chemicals" exist in these products that we should avoid. Could you please do a fact check on that? • Hey Dr. Mike! As a chef, I have a couple of tips to help you with the concept of weekly meal prepping. Plan 2 proteins, 1 starch/carb, 1 legume, and any number of supplementary vegetables. Use simple cooking methods, such as baking, to prepare the majority of your proteins for the week. Season the food very lightly when doing this. Blanching your vegetables is a great way to maintain their color for the whole week. Package each category of food item separate from the others, so as to avoid cross contamination. At the day of, after you reheat your food, mix them together along with a sauce or dressing of your choice. These can be made in large batches well in advance in order to keep the ingredients within your specific diet tolerances, or you can seek out purchasing them in sustainable quantities for your budget. The idea with weekly meal prep is that you want to produce low variety, high quantity. Many people I've talked to, who tried to do weekly or monthly meal prep tended to give it up rather quickly because the cooking days were just too intensive to handle with the huge variety they were trying to make. When you use sauces and dressings to mix it up, you can use the same basic ingredients to produce massive variety. You can take a packet of taco seasoning, and lightly season some already cooked rice, mix in a little bit of water and then microwave it to make a "taco" bowl along with your protein, legume, and veggies. Or you can go Asian with oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and a little rice vinegar.

  • So would it be considered bad that I only eat 1 or 2 times a day? High water intake but im not hungry that often. Im definitely not a healthy weight (over weight) but im curious if how I eat is part of the problem
