The Uncomfortable Truth About Reopening Schools

For the last several weeks I’ve been researching the debate on whether or not we should reopen schools around the country when summer vacation ends in August. This is an extremely complicated issue with each side, open or closed, making very compelling arguments. I decided to talk to Dr. David Epstein, an expert in children’s health working as a Pediatric ICU doctor in California, to see how seriously coronavirus was impacting children and what the effects of returning to school might be. PLEASE make sure you watch the entire video before commenting, as this is an extremely nuanced topic and cherry-picking phrases without the whole context will create a destructive discussion as opposed to a constructive one!

  • My son has to go to school everyday for a couple of hours but I called the school and said "Stop sending them to school for every day it is way to dangerous" in my opinion kids should only go at school whenever their parents tell them because what happens if their child gets covid and goes to school with it and infect a other child. That's why it's better if parents decide if they go to school because they are the first ones that will notice.

This is affecting people in all sorts of ways that you guys don't even consider.. like children learning social habits at that pivotal time... • I do think a forgotten demographic here is the older school children. I'm in my final year of Sixth Form (17/18 years), so our chances of passing and suffering from the virus are very similar to those other adults, but we're still back at school. I don't want to go online again but despite my school's relatively small population my year alone has had more cases that the six years below us combined. I'm not in America but the cases are very much rising again, and whilst death rates are lower we're already seeing more and more cases of teachers and parents being infected. We need a better model.

  • I appreciate all the different pieces of this conversation. Weighing the pros and cons of each issue and perspective. Something I've noticed in the comments is people either saying we shouldn't open schools due to x,y,z or we should open schools due to x,y,z but it's all within the sphere of their personal family situations. Guess what, both can be valid. If you're not comfortable with your child returning in person, due to at risk family members, or any worries you have, they don't have to. Many districts are either offering streaming into the live classroom for at home learning, or a certified home school type curriculum to follow at home either online or through correspondence, that is monitored by a teacher. On the same token if you want your child to return to school, due to economic needs, educational needs, socialization, etc.. and feel that the sanitization procedures of the school are good then your child should be able to return to school, provided they wear a mask, respect distances, and follow cleaning protocols. Believe it or not it can be safe for school districts, especially in small towns to open safely and not have reported covid cases. It can also be true that say schools in the heart of L.A. or N.Y.C. perhaps cannot open safely yet. The decision should lie with either individual districts or even schools, the health departments in said area, and the families they serve. Not by commentors on the internet or any one single experience.

  • So, kids can be vectors of transmission, infect their families, AND each other, masks/shields, handwashing or not, and teachers face the same thing. Asymptomatic people transmit the virus, and this is ONE thing they're BOTH overlooking. Cafeterias encourage mass gathering tendencies, and to set a schedule would be impossible for even the "three foot rule". Smaller lunch "pods", and eating requires no mask, or at the least, open masks. Then, if a kid falls ill, there's four things it could be: allergies, flu, cold, or COVID-19. Going back to "normal" isn't happening anytime soon, whether or not we want to, it won't be for quite a while. And with spikes overwhelming hospitals, I don't know how much longer this will be sustainable, let alone how people are going to pay the trillions of dollars owed after all is said and done. Thinking of the now is moot if there seems to be no end in sight, despite the best efforts.

My district opened against the recommendation of the local health district and the procedures that were put in place (response to a positive test) have not been followed. Teachers are not allowed to inform parents about which masks are most/least effective and we can’t have kids change their mask even if we provide an alternative!

  • We need to figure this out. We need to be realistic. The virus is here to stay, unfortunately. Shutdowns can not go on forever. Parents need to work and make money. We need to reopen everything so we can all work. If COVID-19 doesn’t kill us then the shutdowns will cause way more damage.

    • @Matthew Snyder the test is there to detect that specific kind of virus and it does that. Even the smallest amount of viral load means you ARE positive and contagious

      Metal PuppetMetal Puppet8 kun oldin
    • @Metal Puppet I’m sorry I didn’t explain that so well what I’m saying is the PCR tests are overly sensitive so they will give a positive outcome even if the individual may not be infected they are just detecting trace amounts of viral RNA which is not the same as the actual virus itself in the nasal cavity of an individual. There have been many doctors who have spoken out against the validity of PCR test and it’s pretty well known that they are not as accurate as we have been reporting in the main stream media. Because they are overly sensitive they are very good at detecting something that could be an indication that the individual is infected with the virus.

      Matthew SnyderMatthew Snyder8 kun oldin
    • @Matthew Snyder thats BS. If you have it in you, you are infected. You cant have the virus in you and not be infected. Thats totally impossible. You can have it and have no symptoms. But that still means you're contagious

    Ethan AugurEthan Augur10 kun oldin
    • @Ethan Augur when it comes to deciding about the measures against it deaths of Covid itself are irrelevant anyways. Sounds weird but its the truth. The real danger are the severe cases. Which are WAYYY more than they are in a regular flu season. By severe I dont mean deadly but I mean people who need to go to the hospital. Which causes health care systems to collapse and because of that people with other conditions like heart attacks, strokes etc, who normally would have had a survival rate of like 95% die a whole lot more often because of missing ressources. Thats the real tragedy. And we can avoid that with lockdowns, wearing masks etc

      Metal PuppetMetal Puppet8 kun oldin
    • @Metal Puppet about 200,000 people in the US have died from the virus from the CDC. From 1 to 25 years of age less than 500 have died. Without preexisting conditions age 65 to 85 about 150,000 have died. So no it’s not as common not even close like incomparable.

      Ethan AugurEthan Augur8 kun oldin
    • @Ethan Augur they can and they have died though. Its just not as common

      Metal PuppetMetal Puppet8 kun oldin

      Metal PuppetMetal Puppet8 kun oldin
  • Total deaths from Covid in the US for kids between 0 and 17 is currently at 100 (Feb to Oct). For reference, pneumonia deaths for the same age range and timeframe is 337. data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Provisional-COVID-19-Death-Counts-by-Sex-Age-and-S/9bhg-hcku Delay school opening? Dr. Jay Bhattacharya has been advocating for a risk based mitigation from the beginning to help to isolate those at high risk while allowing those at very low risk to live their lives. All of these types of contagious viruses will eventually run through the population and become a part of the environment and stop due either to herd immunity from exposure or from vaccination. Older teachers or those with serious comorbidities might be good to isolate themselves and maybe work from home. But, no grade schools should ever have been shutdown in the first place. All this has accomplished is making poor Americans even poorer. You must also consider the costs of any steps you take, which are not just financial. This includes the people that don't get other necessary medical treatment for serious disease. Half of people receiving cancer treatment said that they were avoiding going to the doctor due to their risk of covid. This was months after healthcare facilities had implemented covid procedures to essentially eliminate this risk for these situations. Then mental health and suicides. List goes on and on. I just hope a year from now when the damage from lockdowns can be counted the people that pushed for the draconian policies will publicly accept that they were wrong and apologize for advocating for such bad ideas.

    • @Metal Puppet I never compared deaths of all ages of covid to deaths of all ages to the flu. Maybe you meant to make that replay against a different comment?

      Alex JonesAlex Jones8 kun oldin
    • @Metal Puppet Did you actually look at the link I provided to the US CDC? I'll say it again, CHILDREN (which have different risks than elderly) have almost no risk of dying from Covid. So far, only 102 people under 18 died from Covid in the US out of the over 200,000 total deaths. In contrast, 340 died from pneumonia and 124 from influenza during the same Covid timeframe. Look at this link and see for yourself data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Provisional-COVID-19-Death-Counts-by-Sex-Age-and-S/9bhg-hcku

      Alex JonesAlex Jones8 kun oldin
    • @Alex Jones It is simply false that more people die from the flu than from Covid. In my country we have had 411 deaths from the flu in the last flu season. Which was from October 2019 until April 2020. Thats 7 months. We had almost 10000 Covid deaths in half that time. People try to blow up the flu death numbers. There never was a flu season where tens of thousands have died. In no country.

      Metal PuppetMetal Puppet8 kun oldin
    • @Metal Puppet It is almost exclusively old and/or sick people with comorbidities that have died in the US. 96% of people recorded as a Covid death had at least one other comorbidity and on average, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes per death. abc-7.com/news/2020/08/31/cdc-report-shows-94-of-covid-19-deaths-in-u-s-had-contributing-conditions/ Children have almost no risk of dying from Covid. So far, only 102 people under 18 died from Covid in the US out of the over 200,000 total deaths. In contrast, 340 died from pneumonia and 124 from influenza during the same Covid timeframe. data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Provisional-COVID-19-Death-Counts-by-Sex-Age-and-S/9bhg-hcku I few highly publicized deaths of young healthy children can be emotionally powerful but you must look at the underlying data yourself. Sounds like people in the tabloid media have already chosen a view for you and planted that idea into your brain so that you are closed off from conflicting data. Why else would you respond with such emotional wording and profanity when all I've presented is a reasonable difference of opinion that is supported by evidence.

      Alex JonesAlex Jones8 kun oldin
    • @Alex Jones Italy's situation is NOT because of old population ffs. They dont have a THAT much older population. And they dont have THAT much more people with pre existing health issues. Thats absolute bs. Young and otherwise fit people died from Covid in Italy and everywhere else. They just have reacted too slow. When they went into lockdown it was already too late. Same in America etc

  • My disabled sister just returned to school. They promised, prior to today, that everyone would wear masks and social distance. She came home without a mask. And they said they cannot expect their students to wear masks (children nor adults), or force social distancing. They're still *following all recommendations* (?) And the rules to reopen. They're cleaning classes every hour, and the busses before and after. Kids can't come in with 'even a runny' nose. There are asymptomatic carriers, and you don't show immediate symptoms. I know, I *had* it. I shown symptoms days after I last was in public. Plus, these kids *all* have underlying health conditions. My parents are okay with this, because "we need to return to normal". I'm, however, terrified. For my sister, the educators, the students, my family, and myself.

There is no safe district. There is no safe teacher. We ALL LIVE IN A 2D WORLD. IT'S A PANDEMIC. It's not the teachers job to sacrifice their lives in order to socialize children. Traditional school has only been traditional for about 100 years.

Leaders should be aware that mandating masks on the citizens of a nation and preventing their access to food, healthcare , transportation or education if they don't comply, is a war crime.

    Global0bserveRGlobal0bserveR12 kun oldin
  • This is a very important topic of discussion and our nation should have been discussing and planning for this way before it started to do so. I am an elementary school teacher and I believe that kids need to be in the classroom for many reasons. However, I know of many of my fellow teachers who are in a position where 1) they are at high risk or 2) have family members at home who are at high risk. Teachers should not have to put their lives or their family member's lives on the line here. There are many different alternatives and safety precautions that could have been put in place way before it was a month before school was to reopen. Such as better preparation of classrooms, spacing out how many students are in the classroom on a given day or month, Federal funding for sanitation of the school, classrooms and common areas - I could go on and on. But the real truth is, in my opinion, our Secretary of Education and President has failed our education system by essentially ignoring medical professionals like you and your guest for far to long only to come up with a hap-hazzard solution (for solely political reasons) that I believe will turn out in a very bad way once flu season begins to climb for everyone. I think I speak for many public school teachers in this topic.

  • I under stand why they shouldn’t but it’s harder to do it online but kids from 5th grade or elementary should stay home because they don’t understand how to we’re a mask wash hands and social distans

    William SmithWilliam Smith12 kun oldin
  • Ok let’s look at this situation this way Without a pandemic, school is still one of the leading causes of stress in kids and teens for many reasons. Bullying, academic stress (which is why the educational system needs to change) And think about this. Reopening schools isn’t gonna make things normal. There’s still the stress that COVID is causing (whether COVID is overhyped or not) And schools will be mandating masks and checking temperatures and school won’t be the same. Kids will have to distance Meaning that kids won’t get the school experience they’ve always had. It’s just added stress And with the amount of stress school causes kids already, is it really good for their mental health to send them back? Not to mention. Sure middle aged people and kids have low death rates from COVID. BUT THEY EXIST! There are deaths among families like that. It’s not safe to risk it as there’s a family in the us losing someone close to them because we’re sending kids in school. Yes. Online schooling isn’t as efficient as regular schooling. But why don’t we, instead of sending kids back, adapt to that and improve how online learning works.

  • So many are saying COVID is a hoax and “certain site” is the truth while everything mg else is wrong. How do you know. Every part of the media has different and wildly different point of views Unless you’re an actual professional or have seen every part all the way There’s not way an average person truly knows “the truth” of this scenario People talk about their opinions being right and calling others propaganda while they’re spreading propaganda themselves. Hypocrites And in this situation, whether you believe COVID is bad or not, the best route to take in my OPINION, is to be cautious as if it is as bad as the media makes it. Worse case scenario, you don’t have as big of a social life and you have to rely on the internet for communication and we wait a while for things to open up but it wasn’t as bad as it was said Best case scenario. It was as bad as it was and things get better because everyone listened and wore their masks Compare the possible worse case scenario of this to the possible worse case scenario of not wearing masks and treating COVID like it’s nothing: Worse case scenario of treating COVID like it’s nothing You spread the virus because the was as bad as the media says and millions more die and things take even longer to reopen. The us. Still won’t be allowed on the travel list. The economy will suffer more than it has already because people are dying and things need to be shut down again. Which sound better?

  • If they reopen schools, that’s risking multiple staff members and hundred(s) of students and won’t be “controlled”. There was a school that reopened and a kid died of COVID-19. Is that not something to see that opening schools can risk kids and adults lives? What if one of the older teachers died because a kid came to school with covid but was symptomatic and spread it to the adult? Do they switch back to online? Do they tell everyone to get tested? If the school can’t even be safe for just 20 people, with the chance of having the virus, why should the school reopen? Yes, it doesn’t affect kids as much (most of the time) as an adult, but taking the chance everyday 5 days of the week is not worth being able to see your friends, teachers and peers. Long story short, it’s a bad idea.

    • Its not about fatalities you idiot. Situations like the one in Italy have happened. And not only there. Also in the USA etc. Health care systems were and still are overwhelmed. That is a fact. The horrible thing about Covid is how many severe cases there are. By severe I do not necessarily mean life threatening. But so bad that they need to go to the hospital. Those numbers are in no way shape or form compareable to a flu season. They are wayyy higher. Otherwise situations like in Italy could have never happened. It has calmed down a little bit. But why? Of course because of the immediate reactions of the governments!! Without these EVERY country would struggle with missing ressources, not enough beds etc

  • Schools have been open in Sweden during the whole pandemic, they were never closed, and NOT ONE single person below 21 yo have died in Sweden. Actually Swedish kids were less infected than the Finnish kids and they had their schools closed. Aprox 2 million Swedes have had covid-19 but only 641 people below 70 yo have died so the fatality rate is 0,038 ‰ for people below 70. It's a bigger risk you will die in a car crash. Also, teachers in Sweden were LESS sverely ill in covid-19 than others who went to work. They have probably built up a better immune system in their work during the years. WHO warned that all strong measures and school closures are a big threat to a whole generation of kids and it's really sad that this very important issue has been a political issue in the US. I can't understand why the DEM don't stand up for the poor and vulnerable children who will suffer the most if schools don't open up. They can't afford the best equipment and the domestic violence is a bigger threat for them. For us in Sweden the world has gone mad. So open your schools.

    SilentscreamSilentscream24 kun oldin
    • @Metal Puppet Why are you lying? I get very upset when you spread these lies. Our hospitals are NOT overwhelmed, not the slightest. You are so scared by your newspapers with their "breaking news", it's really sad to see. We don't try to "save our economy". We are trying to save our lives in the long run. 92.000 dies in Sweden each year, this year it will be 95.000. So we Swedes are mass murderers? Well, let me tell you something: What people like you encourage is the mass murder of young healthy people. E.g. 5 million kids below 5yo starve to death each year but because the world got mad it will be 7-8 million kids each year in the future, and you and your like-minded people, with your insane perspective on life, are part of that mass murder.

      SilentscreamSilentscream15 kun oldin
    • @Silentscream e-learning platforms are very well developed at this point. There is NO evidence that children have any kind of disadvantage when learning at home. Covid spreads like wild fire. Especially amongst those who dont usually get bad symptoms because they care less. Which is INCREDIBLY dangerous. We can not risk herd immunity with this thing or we 100% will all end up like Italy. The situation in Sweden is BY FAR not as good as it seems. Hospitals are more and more overwhelmed. But the government doesnt care just to “save the economy“. Which is mass murder. The economy will easily recover anywhere. And so will home schooled kids. Some may want to or have to repeat a school year or two. Who the f cares? Who didnt repeat year or two in school because of bad results? Most did. And this is nothing different. Some kids actually like learning from home better. And for the parents its great too because they have to FINALLY learn how to actually fucking care for their children and not push the burden onto teachers who can do NOTHING for the actual upbringing of the kid.

      Metal PuppetMetal Puppet15 kun oldin
    • @Metal Puppet No, studies from Sweden shows that kids don't spread the virus as much as it is spread among adults, so they are not a "big threat". That's just a big lie. They are our future. When you close schools the price you have to pay regarding their future health is worse compared with the small threat they are. WHO warnes that we will see a lost generation if this continues. Even the Norwegian and Danish Health authorities didn't recommend school closures and regrets they didn't fight more against their governments to keep schools open. The spread is increasing a bit in Sweden right now among young grown-ups and people at work (age 18-60) but no indication that yonger kids drives this. The Swedish Health authorities will NEVER close our elementary schools because they consider the health of our citizens in a bigger perspective and you will NEVER gonna be able to convince me school closures is the right thing to do, because it's not in the long run. Protect the elderly and vulnerable more instead. And as said before, Swedish teachers were less severly ill in covid19 compared with other professions. "All lives matters" you often hear people say. Well then forbid the car and all dangerous professions. 1,3 million dies in traffic each year and 1 million at work, the same as the covid-19. So I ask again, what's the perspective? A hard lockdown can only be motivated if the health care system tends to collapse, but that's not the case in most countries now.

      SilentscreamSilentscream15 kun oldin
    • Children might not die from it (at least not a lot. Some definitely have died even without pre existing health conditions). But they still are a big threat. Because they can easily catch it and spread it without even knowing. Which has happened countless times here in Germany. A LOT of schools had to close again after just a week or two because there were Covid cases all over the place. Even if those kids probably wont be severely ill they will spread it to someone who will get severely ill from it. Covid can be spread even if you are asymptomatic.

I swear every time a student is being interviewed on the news or something about reopening schools, their parents tell them what to say and it’s not the kids opinion. Hope those parents feel fucking stupid when the Covid rate skyrockets in their area because they decided to open the schools with the shittiest safety percussions.

  • The true issue is teachers versus students. I keep hearing that it's rude, disgusting, terrible etc to care for a child's mental health and how they are taught compared to Teachers. If schools follow a decent protocol like the social distancing, masks on, and having a backup plan, there isn't much issue. Most likely schools won't stay open, but some of these kids need that social interaction that they aren't getting from sitting in front of a screen and being talked at by a teacher. This sounds biased, but these kids ARE the future, and we should be using this to educate them and prepare them further. Yes, of course there are risks, but the fact that people are being called heartless, insensitive and more because they want some children to get the education and social workings they need to get better in life, it's messed up.

  • It isn't just about the families that the kids live with. If kids catch it and spread it all around the school, they bring it home to their families. Some of those families have high risk individuals and some don't. However all of those families go to the grocery stores to buy groceries and some of them go to work as well. The more of those families that have COVID, the more it is going to spread in their communities when they are at work or the grocery store or any other place they must visit.

  • These drs talking about traumatic aspects of being isolated while I’m sitting here thinking about the trauma I suffered being forced to interact with peers and teachers when I was a pre teen and teenager. I was born in the wrong time. This would have been the perfect thing for me to go through. I would have been a much less stressed person had I got to stay home to learn instead of being harassed by peers and teachers alike.

  • As a teacher, there are no acceptable amount of deaths. We shouldn't be reopening schools until we have a treatement and/or vaccine. Also teachers aren't sacrificial lambs -.-

    • @Suzanne O There absolutely is a load of evidence that children are spreading it. Yes most of them are asymptomatic. But that makes the situation somewhat even worse because Covid can be and is spread even without symptoms. You just have to be positive. Here in Germany countless schools closed again because there were a lot of cases amongst children.

    • @Suzanne OYes I am. Teachers are trained how to offer intervention if they fall behind during the online learning period, but I can't do that if I'm dead or if they're dead. Until it's safe, they should not be going back period end. In addition, those students that are going back are going to be mentally and emotionally scarred. I know when my elementary teacher died, I was beyond upset and that was a car accident that had nothing to do with me. Imagine learning that your teacher died from a virus that can be carried by you. I know as a kid I would've blamed myself and probably my parents for making me go to school. Also, they won't be able to hug their friends. Imagine seeing your friends, but you can't come within six feet. Additionally, kids can and do get the virus and there have been insane spikes in cases and mass teacher deaths in several locations like Georgia where schools have reopened. I understand that kids have bad home lives, and I feel for them and have supported them as I can as an individual, but as a teacher we cannot possibly be expected to carry all the burdens of our failed government system. We're there to educate and assist and often emotionally support children, and we can't do that while fearing for our lives.

    • As another teacher, you can't possibly be saying that kids should stay out of school for 1,5 years, at least? In my country we've reopened primary schools since may and it has not lead to a surge in cases whatsoever. If anything let those kids be in school, there is literally zero evidence that they play a role in spreading of the virus and to keep them out of school for so long is literally abusive

  • My school was dumb as when it was opened back in March ish. Students were allowed but not adults like (parents/caretakers/guardians) Like who do you think we live with, if they have the virus we do too P.S I will go and trust my school with sanitisation when they get better toilet paper

  • I am so glad to hear from a lot of youth of all ages it touches me. They should be heard. They actually know what they will do and they are honest. So it says it all without saying it. But we live in different areas and know how sick people are where we live. So I say take care and as a family make a choice to protect them. Allow your children to talk to. We have some great young people who are honest. I love ❤️ it. Well I love youth. I listen to them. I wish all of your families well no matter what my opinion is.
